DP Students Explore Culture, Hospitality, and Lifelong Learning in Kuala Lumpur
From November 20th to 22nd, 2024, Medan Independent School’s DP students embarked on an enriching journey to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This overseas trip was more than just an excursion; it was a hands-on learning experience where students applied their CAS skills in planning, organizing, and traveling, gaining invaluable life lessons along the way.
The trip began weeks earlier, with students collaborating to organize logistics, pack essentials, and prepare for the adventure. This out-of-classroom experience fostered critical skills like problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. The anticipation built as the students navigated the excitement of air travel and arriving in a new country, setting the tone for a memorable journey.
A highlight of the trip was a visit to Monash University, where students toured the campus, interacted with staff, and attended presentations about academic programs and student life. They gained firsthand insights into the demands and opportunities of university education, such as the importance of time management, balancing academics with extracurricular activities, and the benefits of engaging with a multicultural student body. This experience inspired students to reflect on their own aspirations, encouraging them to set goals for their academic and career journeys.
Beyond the university visit, students explored Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant culture, visiting the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and Aquaria, ice skating at Sunway Pyramid Mall, Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) with a variety of cultural dance performances. and immersing themselves in the bustling Central Market and Petaling Street. A cooking class added another layer of cultural appreciation, as students learned to prepare an authentic Malaysian breakfast.
Throughout the trip, students experienced Malaysia’s renowned hospitality, savoring diverse cuisines and building cross-cultural understanding. This trip exemplified the DP philosophy of nurturing globally minded, well-rounded individuals, leaving students with skills, memories, and inspiration that will guide their future endeavors.
My thanks to Ms. Imelda Hutabarat(CAS Coordinator) and to the many parents for their continuing support, and especially to Mr. Ian Lau for his insight, enthusiasm and guidance in making the trip such a great success.
