Promoting a Love of Stories at MIS
By Imelda Hutabarat, Teacher Librarian
We are excited to share some activities featured during the recently concluded Arts and Literacy Week at MIS, held from March 4 to 8, 2024. The week was filled with enriching experiences for our students, particularly in the Kindergarten and PYP classes.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the fourteen teachers who volunteered as Mystery Readers, making this week a delightful journey of storytelling. Students had the privilege of enjoying stories from a diverse range of teachers, including those from the PYP, MYP, and DP programs. These stories not only captivated the students’ imaginations but also imparted valuable insights and knowledge.
As a special highlight, we were honored to have Ms. Indriani, a passionate literacy activist, as our guest storyteller. Her session in the Music Room, attended by approximately 25 students from Kindergarten to PYP 4, was a mesmerizing experience. Ms. Indriani utilized various props and materials, creating a visually engaging atmosphere that showcased the elements of each story. Her interactive approach, involving actions and improvisation, further heightened the students’ involvement and enthusiasm.
The impact of these activities goes beyond the immediate joy of storytelling. They have played a significant role in fostering a love for stories, nurturing a passion for reading, and cultivating an appreciation for the arts and literacy among our students. It’s heartening to note that the students not only enjoyed the stories but also demonstrated the IB learner profiles of being open-minded, principled, and courageous.
We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone involved in making these activities which formed a part of Arts and Literacy Week a resounding success. Together, we continue to inspire a love for learning and creativity in our students.
