We recently hosted a Coffee/Tea Morning with parents to discuss new developments at MIS. We want to strengthen our parent community by electing a PTA president and assigning classroom representatives. Mr. Gaetano (Mr. G) pointed out that schools with higher parent engagement produce students with stronger academic results. Mr. G described the work of three new board committees (finance, marketing, and scholarship).
Mr. G discussed how important it is for parents and the school to partner together in safeguarding our students. We introduced our IB Core Program last year across all age levels. Teachers taught units covering bullying, online safety, drugs and alcohol dependency, and healthy relationships. In addition to topics in child safeguarding, students also had lessons covering IB Approaches to Learning, skills that are necessary for life-long learning.
We also discussed the school’s plans to give students more opportunities to work with other schools across our region. Last year our students performed well in the Medan round of the World Scholar’s Cup. Two teams will travel to Bangkok to compete against schools from around Southeast Asia. We have introduced the Model United Nations (MUN) to give students the experience of participating in a MUN Conference. We are offering a CCA in the Math Olympiad to give students a chance to compete in mathematics competitions. We are hosting the Makeblock Robotics Competition for the city of Medan. We also hope to increase the number of athletic competitions. Our goal is to give our students a chance to excel in many different areas.
The meeting was closed with a school tour hosted by the Principal, Mr. G, showing off the renovation projects that were done during the summer break. We were all delighted with the new upgrades made all over the school and look forward to future projects. We look forward to seeing you at the next coffee morning.
