MYP School Fair and SA Trips
By Natasha (MYP4)
On Thursday 30th, December 2023, the MYP students hosted a school fair to raise money for the upcoming SA trips. The MYP45 student would visit ISCO, Indonesian Street Children Organization On Thursday, December 7th, 2023, and the MYP23 would visit an Orphanage on the following day. Our aim was to raise approximately four million Indonesian Rupiah, for both trips, that would be used to purchase gifts for the children.
During the fair, we had several activities and food stalls. We were divided into groups and each group created one or two fun activities. We had a range of games and activities such as “What’s In the Box”, Ring Toss, Bowling, Henna printing, Hoops for Hope, Ping Pong balls with Cups, Mini golf courses, Cup Stacking Challenge, Face Painting, and food such as waffles, muffins, Milo, milk tea, crisps, and soft drinks. The fair took place in the School Gym during periods five to seven, and students from kindergarten, PYP, and DP joined us during each of these periods.
The fair was a great success and most students had a lot of fun playing all the games. Everyone was excited about the outcome, as we not only achieved our goal of raising four million IDR, but also earned a total of 4,589,000 IDR. With this money, we were able to purchase gifts and supplies like stationary, food, and hygiene products for the children at ISCO and the orphanage. However, most of the groups ran out of prizes and we had to close down most of the games by the end of period 7. If we were to organise such an event again, we would plan more efficiently to ensure that we have enough prizes to last for the entire duration of the fair.
Looking back at the school fair, we had the opportunity to improve our organisational and communication skills. For instance, some of our fellow students were away on the NJIS STEM trip to Jakarta, so we had to plan and work around that to ensure we completed our tasks on time. Additionally, we had to adjust the difficulty levels of our games and instructions to suit the varying ages of the participants.
On Thursday the 7th of December, we visited the ISCO children and the following Friday MYP23 visited the Orphanage to give the children gifts and participate in fun learning activities with them. Each group planned activities to ensure the children learned something, had fun and practised their English.
An example of one of the activities we did was charades, it was very successful and the children engaged well. We asked the children to pick out an animal from a cup and act it out. The children then had to guess in Bahasa Indonesian and then in English. If they were correct we rewarded them with a small piece of candy to encourage more children to want to participate. Though some children had difficulties pronouncing some words, they practised their English and enjoyed themselves. However, some children were quite shy so we had to encourage them to engage more. Therefore next time we can provide easier activities for different age groups and encourage them to participate in more activities.
