Unlocking Creativity: MYP 4-5 Design Class Ventures into Graphic Design with GIMP
by Ms. Desy Tarigan, MYP Design Teacher
Graphic design focuses on creating visual content for communication purposes. It can embody brand identity for compelling advertising and also play an important role in changing the way we view and interact with the world around us. In the third term, Semester two, MYP 4-5 Design class students began to learn about graphic design and designing visual content by using an open-source image editor, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) software.
The project in the fourth term was to create graphic designs for clients. Year five students were responsible for finding their own clients. Their designs could be used for any product the client desires. In order to develop the design, students used the design cycle process. After the process of interviewing clients, students came up with the idea to use their graphic designs on T-shirts, key chains, stickers, logos, backdrop, and water bottles.
One of the highlights of the Design class was the integration of our laser engraving and cutting machine into the creative process. This machine is a new addition to our design tool box. Designs on water bottles and key chains were engraved utilizing the machine. Besides engraving, the machine can also cut a wide range of materials. I look forward to seeing future uses that students come up with for this fun new tool.
