We would like to thank the Malaysian Consulate for inviting some of our high school students to their Celebration of the 57th ASEAN Day. Our students learned about the history of the ASEAN organization going back to the original declaration signed in Thailand in 1967 by five nations – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. They learned interesting facts about the area, population, economy, and eventual expansion to include Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Guest speakers talked about some of the common goals of the ASEAN nations and the rotating presidency, which is scheduled to be headed by Malaysia in 2025. They discussed the ASEAN Way of conflict resolution. Our students were able to ask the panelists questions. One of the highlights was when the Consul General of the Malaysian Consulate H.E. Shahril Nizam Abdul Malek challenged the youth to take an active role in the development of ASEAN nations. We would like to help spread the news of the ASEAN Youth Essay Writing Competition sponsored by the Malaysian Consulate in Medan. Please click here for more information.
