Excitement Builds as Students Prepare for World Scholar’s Cup in Medan
by Mr. Jason Pringle, MYP/DP English Teacher
The air is buzzing with anticipation at our school as a group of dedicated students prepares to compete in the prestigious World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) competition, set to take place in Medan on May 21st and 22nd, 2024. This annual academic competition, renowned for its challenging and diverse range of topics, promises to be an enriching experience for all participants.
For weeks, our students have been rigorously honing their skills in various areas crucial to the competition. One of the primary focuses has been on enhancing their debating abilities. Guided by our skilled teachers, Mr. Gaetano and Mr. Pringle, they have engaged in numerous practice debates, learning to construct compelling arguments, rebut effectively, and present their ideas confidently. These sessions have not only sharpened their critical thinking skills but also fostered teamwork and collaboration, essential traits for success in the WSC.
In addition to debating, the students have been diligently working on their knowledge of the competition’s wide-ranging topics. This year’s themes cover a fascinating array of subjects, from science and technology to literature and the arts. To prepare, the students have been making and answering quiz questions, diving deep into research, and engaging in spirited discussions to share insights and broaden their understanding. This collaborative approach has helped them to develop a comprehensive grasp of the material, ensuring they are well-equipped for the challenge ahead.
Another significant aspect of their preparation has been essay writing. Understanding that the WSC includes a rigorous essay component, our students have been practising how to articulate their thoughts clearly and persuasively in written form. This practice has been taking place in their English classes where they have been working on crafting analytical essays, focusing on structure, coherence, and argumentation. This practice not only benefits them in their academic pursuits, but also prepares them for the competition.
As the competition date approaches, the enthusiasm among the students is palpable. They are eager to showcase their hard work and dedication on an international stage. Beyond the thrill of competition, the World Scholar’s Cup offers an invaluable opportunity for our students to connect with peers locally and from around the world, exchange ideas, and gain a broader perspective on global issues.
We are incredibly proud of our students’ commitment and perseverance as they prepare for this event. Their efforts reflect the values of our school and the importance we place on holistic education. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to celebrating their achievements.
Stay tuned for updates on their journey and accomplishments. Let’s cheer on our scholars as they embark on this exciting adventure!
