MYP4/5 Visit to Yapentra
by MYP4/5 Students
On August 29th, 2024, the MYP 4/5 class visited Yapentra (Yayasan Pendidikan Tuna Netra), a school at Lubuk Pakam for visually impaired students. The MYP45 students prepared and interviewed some of the Yapentra students about their daily lives and some of the challenges they face. Additionally, the MYP 4/5 students organized some gifts and activities for the children including Oreo truffle-making activity, mystery box, a general knowledge quiz, musical statue, and more.
When the MYP 4/5 students arrived at Yapentra they were greeted by one of the staff members of the school who explained how the school accommodates the disabled students. He explained that the school modified some aspects of the student’s education to meet their needs. For example, when playing football, they placed a bell inside the football so the students could follow the sound. Afterwards, the MYP45 class were given a tour of the school and met some of the students. The teachers and students explained how they learnt and even let the MYP45 students try reading and writing braille.
After the tour, the students at Yapentra gathered in the eating hall where they held some performances for the MYP45 class, showcasing talents like singing, piano, and saxophone. The students explained that they relied on past experiences and other senses to engage in these hobbies. After that, the MYP45 students conducted interviews with some of the Yapentra students. This was an eye-opening experience for the MYP45 students as they learnt that Yapentra students faced discrimination and lots of daily challenges yet are taught methods to overcome this and are often supported by the school.
Finally, the MYP45 class shared their activities with Yapentra students. The children all enjoyed the games and appreciated the gifts we shared. The MYP45 class found it very interesting how the children engaged in some of the games despite their disability. They relied mostly on their other senses to play the games. Additionally, a few MIS students played chess against a Yapentra student who is the national champion. Despite it being a close match, the Yapentra student won both matches.
The visit to Yapentra was eventful, the MYP45 students played a variety of games and activities with the Yapentra students. These activities and events involved the full attention and participation of not just a small group of students, but the entire students.
Overall, the activities were impactful and meaningful. It was an exciting and eye-opening experience that motivated us to take action and learn more about the disabled community around us. Afterwards, everyone said goodbye and returned to MIS.
