STEM Trip Jakarta
by Genevieve Gaetano (PYP6)
The recent Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) trip was very exciting! Students from grades 3 through 10 met up at the airport on Thursday, November 23 at 5:00 in the morning. When we landed in Jakarta, we took a bus to IPTEK, a science museum. IPTEK was very exciting! There were many interactive exhibits, including a human yoyo and an earthquake simulator! After the museum, we went to lunch at a mall. When we were done, we went to the hotel. We were able to hang out in the hotel for about two hours before we went to a mall for dinner. After dinner, we went back to the hotel room, and relaxed until we had to go to bed at exactly 9:30.
On the morning of November 24, we went down to breakfast. Then we took a quick walk to NJIS school which was two blocks away from the hotel. Our group was split into two groups: Lions One and Lions Two. Our two groups went around the school.
The Lions One group were given the following challenges: to build a pathway for plastic balls to go into specific places and to build a container and contraption to get plastic balls out of the NJIS pool! The Lions Two group was also given some challenges. One was to make a catapult shoot a ball toward bowling pins into a cup. During the break we ate an early lunch or late breakfast, and went to the technology room which had Virtual Reality headsets. Most people had the chance to try one of them on! After the break, we continued the challenges. The Lions one group built a tower to withstand an earthquake simulator. The Lions Two group built a tower that could float on top of water. They also made a tower with many antennas with ping pong balls on them. These couldn’t be taped. The tower had to be taller than 10 inches.
After we finished up the activities, we gathered our bags at the hotel and went to the airport to head back to Medan.
Overall this trip was a very exciting experience for us all and most of us would do it again! Thank you to Ms. Sharan and Mr. McGuire for chaperoning!
