Our PYP 1&2 trip to OUH
(Students’ Shared writing)
On Monday 22nd January 2024 we went to the Orangutan Haven. This is a safe place for orangutans that cannot live in the wild because they are sick. It is a 40 minute drive along the road between Medan and Berastagi. Students from PYP 1&2 class went with Mr Alex, Ms Maria, and Mr G.
When we arrived we met Ms Riska who greeted us, and helped us to practice a funny warm up dance. Mr. Gilbert arrived, and we went to the bamboo construction area. He told us about different types of bamboo, and the amazing properties of bamboo! Mr Gilbert loves to build with bamboo because it has amazing properties. Bamboo comes in many different sizes, it grows quickly, it is long, strong, light, flexible, and more fire-resistant than wood! He also said that it can be chopped up and mixed to make bamboo fabric for clothes, as well as thick rigid material like plastic. Mr Gilbert helped us to carefully cut and sand bamboo to make our own cups!
During snack time, we ate boiled sweet potatoes, delicious corn, and fresh bananas. After snack, we went on a bumpy truck ride up and down the hill to meet the orangutan expert Mr Ian. He patiently showed us the river islands where Pagu and the other sick orangutans live. On the way back to the bus, the truck drove slowly through the shallow river. It was very exciting!
