Gardens, Water, and Nature Help Us To Play Sports and Exercise
PYP 1&2, by Mr. Exaudi
In this unit, students learned about ways plants are connected to and support other living things, especially human bodies, and minds.
Engaging in physical activities such as sports and exercise in natural settings such as gardens or near bodies of water offers a multitude of benefits for both body and mind. Listed below are some ways that these elements contribute to enhancing our experience of playing sports and exercising;
Areas in gardens help us with:
- Fresh Air and Oxygen: Gardens provide a natural source of fresh air and oxygen, which is essential for boosting energy levels and improving overall athletic performance.
- Mental Relaxation: The serene and peaceful environment of a garden helps to reduce stress levels and promotes mental relaxation, allowing individuals to focus better on their sports or exercise routines.
- Improved Mood: Being surrounded by greenery and flowers has been shown to elevate mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, making workouts more enjoyable and effective.
- Natural Obstacles and Terrain: Gardens often feature uneven terrain, slopes, and natural obstacles like rocks and tree roots, which can add an element of challenge to workouts; improving balance, coordination, and agility.
Areas near bodies of water support us with:
- Cooling Effect: Exercising near bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, or oceans can provide a cooling effect, especially in hot weather conditions, allowing individuals to exercise comfortably for longer durations.
- Hydration: Bodies of water offer a convenient source of hydration during physical activities. Being near water encourages individuals to drink more water, thus preventing dehydration and promoting optimal performance.
- Low-Impact Exercise: Activities like swimming or water aerobics offer low-impact alternatives to traditional land-based exercises, reducing stress on joints and muscles while still providing an effective workout.
- Scenic Views: The picturesque views around bodies of water create a tranquil and inspiring setting for exercise, motivating individuals to stay active and enjoy their workouts to the fullest.
