On August 16th, 2024, Medan Independent School proudly celebrated Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day with a series of events that brought together students, teachers, and staff in a spirited display of patriotism and community.
The day began with a solemn flag-raising ceremony in the morning led by the Primary Years Programme (PYP 5/6) students. As the red and white flag of Indonesia was hoisted, the national anthem “Indonesia Raya” echoed through the school grounds, filling everyone with a deep sense of pride and unity. The PYP students, with their earnest expressions and synchronized movements, exemplified the values of respect and responsibility that the school strives to instill in its young learners.
In the afternoon, the atmosphere shifted from solemnity to joy as the school community engaged in a series of traditional games that are a hallmark of Independence Day celebrations across the country. The afternoon was filled with laughter and the spirit of togetherness as students and parents participated in various activities, including: a sack race, eating kerupuk, pillow fights, sarung relay and a pop the balloon game.
Each event was a reminder of the rich cultural traditions that continue to thrive in Indonesia, even in modern times. These games not only fostered a sense of friendship among students but also helped them appreciate the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and having fun while celebrating their national identity.
The celebration at Medan Independent School was a resounding success, reflecting the school’s commitment to honoring Indonesia’s heritage and cultivating a strong sense of community among its students. Thank you to all the parents who participated and brought Indonesian, yummy, traditional foods!
