MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME
FROM AGE 12 to 16
The IB’s Middle Years Programme (MYP) aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of local, national and global significance. The result is young people who are creative, critical, and reflective thinkers who can understand the viewpoints of others. The MYP builds on the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed by the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), and prepares students for the demanding requirements of the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
In the MYP at MIS we aim to develop the whole student by giving them a comprehensive academic experience alongside a focus on their social and emotional development and wellbeing. We work to develop strong language skills in English, Bahasa Indonesia, and one additional language with all of our students. We seek to build strong links with our community by engaging our students in service learning. We know that we are preparing our students for an unknown future, and so we work to develop in them the approaches to learning skills that will make them lifelong learners who can adapt to changing circumstances. Students who move into our MYP are amazed at how different it is from other schools. They love the safe and inclusive learning environment and regular engagement with highly qualified and caring teachers.
Projects
THE PERSONAL PROJECT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE MYP FOR MYP 5 STUDENTS, COMPLETED OVER THE COURSE OF THE WHOLE YEAR.
The personal project encourages students to practice and strengthen their approaches to learning (ATL) skills, to consolidate prior and subject-specific learning, and to develop an area of personal interest. The personal project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product/outcome and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP.
The aims of the MYP projects are to encourage and enable students to:
- Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context
- Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understanding through in-depth investigation
- Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time
- Communicate effectively in a variety of situations
- Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning
- Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments
Notes:
- Students in MYP must provide their own Apple iPad or MacBook for their studies.
- It is the student’s responsibility to charge their iPad/MacBook each night so that they have a full charge when they return to school with it the next day.
- It is an expectation that MYP students have an internet connection at home.
- Students may choose CCA based on availability schedules. Our offerings rotate depending on the teachers/partners availability.
- Indonesian students must attend Religion Classes on Thursdays at CCA hours. International students are welcome to apply for these classes.
- Students must bring their spare clothes, water bottles, healthy snacks and lunch everyday.
- On Swimming days, students must bring their own swimming gear such as swimming clothes, goggles, and towel in waterproof bags.
- Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones, smart watches with calling functions or personal listening devices (MP3 players) to classes, or use these devices during a scheduled class/co-curricular. If students bring these devices to school, they should be silenced and secured in their bags/lockers during all classes. The school will not accept responsibility for the safety of these items.
Eligibility Assessment
The school requires at least one day’s notice for any new enrolment starting at the school. Families who arrive at the school unexpectedly will be inducted immediately where possible, with the student/s beginning in class the following day, depending on the completion of enrolment forms, entrance exams and payment of the first invoice.
MIS is permitted to enroll international students who are holding a KITAS or whose parent is a KITAS holding expatriate employee, as well as students of Indonesian nationality, and students of dual nationalities.
MIS accepts students from all curriculum backgrounds. Students enrolling to MYP must submit a Completion Certificate from Primary level (IB or non IB programmes), and are required to complete the MAP test in Science, Language, Math, and Reading. Students must submit Academic Report, Birth Certificate, and Parents’ ID upon enrollment.
Assessment
There are four assessment criteria for each of the MYP curriculum areas. There are three assessment criteria for Personal Project and Interdisciplinary Units. Levels of achievement (maximum 8 for each) are awarded based on descriptors established by the MYP curriculum framework. At the end of each semester, students will receive a report listing final grades and personal comments from each teacher. An indication of their progress with the IB Learner Profile and a personal reflection is also included on reports. Homeroom teacher comments include evaluation of students according to the IB Student Profile. Three times per year students complete online MAP tests, which enable comparisons with students all over the world at the same grade level.
