#MISmedan was founded with one purpose – to build a space for all students to grow, learn, and create with each passing day. Through a unique teaching approach and a truly passionate staff, we help students develop academically and personally to the highest level.
In 1969 several expatriate parents working with the British and American Consulates in Medan developed a school to serve the educational needs of their children. Mrs. Suzy Stuckey, the wife of a Baptist minister, started the school in a house at Jln. Petula No. 36, Medan. There were about 15 children enrolled at the beginning of the 1969 school year.
Mr. Morgan Selvidge took over as principal in 1970. He was the first principal to be recruited from the USA. Modern textbooks and teaching aids based on an American curriculum were used.
About 40 children were enrolled at that time with six full-time teachers, two part-time teachers and a teacher coordinator working in the school. Naturally, small classes were maintained at all levels.
In 1972 with an enrollment too great for the small house, the school was moved to Jln Dr. Cipto 8. Many modifications were made to accommodate the growing expatriate community.
From 1969 to 1976 the school was known as the Medan Joint Consulate School and was administered by the American and British Consulates. This arrangement provided for the import of books and equipment through diplomatic channels. At that time the Parent-Teacher Organization together with the American and British Consulates constituted the decision-making body for the school.
In 1976 various factors, including new regulations from the Indonesian government relative to schools for expatriates and the disinclination of the consulates to continue to govern an ever-growing school, resulted in the school becoming the new Medan International School. Under the new arrangement the MIS Foundation, or “Yayasan”, had full authority to operate a school under the control and responsibility of the MIS Board of Directors (8) whose ultimate responsibility was to the parents whose children attend the school. In May 1976 the first Board of Directors was elected for the MIS Foundation and its school.
In the 1981-1982 school year, MIS began the school year on its present site in a purpose-built campus funded generously by Mobil Oil, Inc. Enrollment grew to new heights.
In 2002, MIS became an authorized school with the Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization becoming the first school in Sumatra to offer this prestigious programme. In 2003, MIS was authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme.
In 2014, following the changes in Indonesian regulation, the school changed its name to Medan Independent School under the same Yayasan Medan International School.
In 2017, MIS was authorized to offer the Diploma Programme, and the 2018-2019 school year marked our first graduating Grade 12 cohort.
Now we have approximately 60% Indonesian students, 3% with dual citizenship, and around 37% international students.
