MIS returns to Korea for YMUN 2025
By Mr. Matthew Gaetano, Principal, MUN Coordinator
Our Model United Nations (MUN) team returned to South Korea to participate in the 2025 Yale Model United Nations conference. We landed at Incheon airport and went directly to the Seooreung, the West Five Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. It is a UNESCO site containing the tombs of royalty from the Joseon Dynasty. The dynasty was the last imperial dynasty and lasted over 500 years. We checked into our hotel and then visited Hanwha Aqua Planet Ilsan aquarium. We had some delicious Korean BBQ and went back to the hotel.
In the morning we joined 500 delegates from 36 countries for delegate training and the opening ceremony featuring Professor Seung Hae Kang, the Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Yonsei University, and Dr. Soo Kim, a Geopolitical Analyst and Founder of Métier Advisory. Students spent the weekend in their committees debating and drafting resolutions to help solve some of the biggest challenges facing our world. I was proud to see our students giving speeches and forming blocs with delegates from other nations. With the skills they are developing in MUN, our students will become leaders in the future. It’s another example of the opportunities our students have at MIS.
The conference finished and we spent the next few days exploring Seoul. Our hotel was in the Myeongdong District which is famous for its skin care products and street food. We also checked out the Nanta Show which blended cooking, comedy, and Korean percussion. We visited Yonsei University, one of the top universities in South Korea. We then went to the artsy district of Insadong where we visited the Jogyesa Buddhist Temple. On our final day we visited Changdeokgung Palace and its Secret Garden. After lunch we went to the D Museum and visited the pop up stores in Seongsu for some last minute shopping.
Our MUN team will try to develop a mini conference to be held on our campus to help students in Medan learn about MUN. We will also be looking for our next conference. Our MUN Co-Curricular Activity is open to students from Grade 7-12.
