Why choose the IB Diploma at MIS?
by Mr. Karl Sloane, IBDP Coordinator
At the start of the academic year, my role as the Diploma Coordinator often attracts a lot of attention from the MYP 5 students, curious and wanting to know what IB Diploma is and how to select the subjects which ultimately launch their higher education at university. At Medan Independent School, students thrive when encouragement and ambition go hand-in-hand. Our community is friendly and welcoming, yet unapologetically academic. That balance—supportive relationships plus high expectations—makes MIS an ideal place to study the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP).
Across two years, students select six subjects (typically three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level) and complete the Core: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service. This blend develops sharp thinkers, confident communicators, and compassionate leaders. Small classes, approachable teachers, and regular feedback mean every learner is known, challenged, and supported.
Pathways are flexible. Families can choose the Full IB Diploma with MIS Diploma, IB Courses with MIS Diploma, or MIS Diploma only. As the university counselor with the help of the specialist teachers, help students pick subjects that fit their strengths, ambitions, and university goals. English-language learners benefit from structured EAL support, and all students build ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills—time management, research, collaboration—that pay off at university.
Academic rigor at MIS is purposeful, not punitive. We use focused progress checks, well thought out ongoing assessments, mock exams, and targeted coaching so students learn how to perform under pressure. TOK nurtures critical thinking and intellectual humility; the Extended Essay builds real research habits; CAS turns passions into meaningful projects that matter to the community.
Beyond the classroom, students lead clubs, sports, service initiatives, and creative productions—experiences that grow character and university-ready portfolios. Our graduates are global in outlook and destination, earning offers from respected universities across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.
If you’re considering the IB Diploma and seeking a school where your child will always be welcomed by name, stretched by excellent teaching, and celebrated for genuine achievement, then my clear advice is to choose the IB Diploma at MIS.
