Robotics CCA: Developing Skills, Creativity, and Confidence
By Ms. Desy Tarigan, Design Teacher
This semester, the Robotics co-curricular activity is held every Tuesday. PYP 4 to MYP 3 students can join to learn coding, building, and problem-solving while exploring creative solutions to various challenges. Through these weekly sessions, students not only develop their technical and mechanicals skills but also learn to work collaboratively and communicate effectively within their teams to solve coding problems.
In the first term, students participated in the MakeX Robotics Competition 2025 Medan Regional on Saturday, October 4, 2025. This event provided a valuable opportunity for students to apply what they had learned to a real competition setting. To support their preparation, there were additional meetings every Thursday, accompanied by a special instructor from the MakeBlock. With guidance from an expert, they got the opportunity to deepen their understanding and refine their robot designs and strategies for facing the competition.
Six risk takers from eight Robotic cocuricular students joined the competition. Three students joined the Inspire category, while three others participated in the Starter category. These categories aligned with their abilities while still encouraging them to push learning new strategies. The results were encouraging, with the team achieving a respectable fourth-place ranking in the competition. Their experiences joining the competition provided students with a sense of accomplishment with their harwork and dedication.
Overall, the first semester of the Robotic CCA has been a meaningful journey. Students learned not only how to build and code robots, but also also how to preserve and approach changgelenge with meaningful creativity. As the program continues in the next semester, students will have the opportunity to explore more concepts and skills also growing their confidence in presenting their creativity with their robot.
