PYP Field Trip to the State Museum of North Sumatra and National Heroes Tomb
by Ms. Bridget, PYP Teacher with the PYP 1/2 students
On September 11, 2024, the PYP 1/2 and PYP 3/4 classes took a field trip to the State Museum of North Sumatra and the National Heroes Tomb. The PYP 1/2 Unit of Inquiry into Who We Are has been a rewarding and self-reflecting journey. Researching and reflecting on essential questions has shaped how we see heroes in the past, present and future. What attributes do heroes possess? What are some ways that heroes have positively influenced and changed the world for the better? What are ways that our attitudes, choices and actions could bring about positive changes?
The State Museum of North Sumatra shared with us an understanding of the past. It was interesting to learn about the different traditions, ways of life and cultural pieces on display there.
In reverence of all the soldiers that died, each student placed a flower on the grave of a fallen soldier at the National Heroes Tomb. It was touching to watch the youth of today remember the heroes of the past.
At the end of the unit, each student was asked how they could be a hero in the future?
Tobias, “I want to teach sports to children like my dad.”
Sacha, “I want to teach people about dragons.”
Zara, “I want to learn about trees and protect them.”
Emily, “I want to help Ian Singleton in the Orangutan Sanctuary.”
Rumi, “I want to be a doctor and help people who are sick or hurt.”
