Our Learning Trees
by Ms. Bridget, PYP 1/2 Teacher
In PYP 1/2, students have been exploring the central idea “People’s bodies help them grow and learn in unique ways” as part of our Who We Are inquiry unit. To reflect on their own journeys, we used the simile “our life is like a tree” and created individual learning trees.
The roots of the tree represent early learning and development before the age of four. Students shared memories of things they learned as very young children, often making connections to what their younger siblings are learning now. The trunk of the tree represents their current learning and growth. Students identified the abilities and interests that make them unique and enjoyed showing one another what they can do. Finally, the leaves of the tree represent future learning and growth. Students thought carefully about the new skills they hope to develop and the things they would like to try in the future.
This activity gave students the opportunity to reflect on their past, present, and future while celebrating the qualities that make each of them special. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they recognized both their own uniqueness and the diversity within our classroom community.
