Running for a Cause:
MIS Color Run Lap-a-Thon Supports the Flood Victims
By Ms. Imelda Hutabarat, Service as Action and Creativity, Activity, and Service Coordinator.
When floods struck North Sumatera on November 26, 2026, the MIS community chose to take meaningful actions. Students, parents, and teachers came together to support the flood victims through a joyful Color Run Lap-a-Thon held at Medan Independent School on Wednesday, December 17, 2026.
MIS regularly supports the Sustainable Development Goals through school activities and programs. Through this event, MIS continues its commitment to the SGDs, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by donating school kits to children affected by floods in Sibolga. This support aims to ensure that affected children can continue their learning despite the challenges they face.
It was inspiring to see the MIS community unite and demonstrate the IB learner profile qualities, including caring, open mindedness, and risk-taking. Before the event, each student received a pledge sheet, and then sought sponsorship by sharing the purpose of this event with their families and friends, both inside and outside the school community.
During the event, students, parents and teachers enthusiastically ran lap by lap together. The colorful powder added excitement and joy, making the day memorable. The MIS community interacted, supported one another, and worked together to reach their goal by running as many laps as possible to raise donations, successfully raising a total of Rp. 67.923.000 through this event.
This meaningful experience helped the students to develop perseverance, and strengthened their ATL skills, including thinking, social, communication, and self-management skills. The students gain a deeper understanding of how their simple actions could be meaningful to others. As one of the students shared that it felt great to be able to help others while having a lot of fun during the event.
Through activities like this, MIS continues to encourage students to take actions and become more globally minded citizens.
