Learning Health & Culture Through Telur Gulung
By Stevan, PYP Teacher
In our Grade 3 and 4 unit, we explored the theme of balanced lifestyles, which included discussions on healthy eating habits and maintaining overall well-being. In our Functional Indonesian class, students learned vocabulary related to healthy and unhealthy foods, as well as habits that support a healthy lifestyle.
From these discussions, students were encouraged to explore traditional Indonesian snacks. One that sparked particular interest was Telur Gulung, a popular street snack enjoyed by Indonesian children since the 1990s, commonly found outside school gates.
As part of our class project, we decided to make Telur Gulung together. The aim of this project was not only to experience cooking but also to expand students’ vocabulary and deepen their understanding of healthy and less healthy food choices.
We carried out the project on September 22. Each student took on a specific role, from whisking eggs and cutting sausages to bravely trying their hand at frying and rolling the eggs. Their enthusiasm was clearly reflected in their feedback about the snack:
- Alexia: “I like Telur Gulung!”
- Madi: “I like it!”
- Myra: “I like it so much!”
- Emily: “I really like it!”
- Rumi: “I want more!”
In the end, the students happily enjoyed their creations with their classmates. Through this project, they were able to learn, explore, and understand concepts not only through theory but also through practical experience. As teachers, we were delighted to see their excitement and are looking forward to more joyful projects in the future.
