From Aphrodite to Zeus
The ABCs of Greek Mythology!
By PYP 3/4
During our current unit of inquiry, the PYP 3/4 class is learning about past civilizations. This week we are delving into Greek mythology. The students were given an opportunity to research one element of Greek mythology, and the results were fantastic! When students are tasked with coming up with their own research questions, their curiosity never ceases to impress me!
Emily was eager to learn more about the behaviour of Griffins. She found out that they are neutral, which means they are not inherently good or evil. Rumi and Sha Sha were bravely looking into the infamous Greek goddess with hair made of snakes. Of course, we are talking about Medusa! Rumi and Sha Sha learned that Medusa had five sisters and when you look at Medusa you turn to stone!
Alexia and Madi are both crazy about animals so they worked together to find out the goddess Artemis can communicate with wildlife and even transform herself or others into wild creatures!
Myra learned the ruler of the gods, Zeus, is actually afraid of only one person. That person is the primordial goddess called Nyx!
Lucas was surprised to find out the most deadly creature in Greek mythology was Typhon. He also learned that Typhon was defeated and imprisoned by Zeus. Lucas chose to sketch a picture of a Satyr, the half human, half goat creature.
Our newest classmate Umar was curious to find out why the ancient Greek gods were always fighting. He learned that Zeus and his brother Hades did not get along because they were always fighting over their role in the cosmos.
It’s safe to say that curiosity is alive and well in PYP 3/4 and we will continue to explore other past civilizations for the remainder of this unit.
