CCA – Little Scientists (August–December 2025)
By Ms. Rizqi, Chemistry/Physics Teacher
Throughout the August–December 2025 semester, our Little Scientists (PYP1-6) participated in purposeful, hands-on inquiry designed to nurture curiosity, critical thinking, and connections to the real world, and each week offered meaningful learning experiences that supported the development of early scientific understanding.
Weeks 1–2: Caring for Our Teeth Through Science
Students investigated the effects of sugary drinks on eggshells as a model for tooth enamel. Through observation and discussion, they developed early cause-and-effect reasoning while learning about healthy choices and dental care.
Week 3: Floating, Sinking, and Density
By testing eggs in different solutions, students explored why objects float or sink. They practiced making predictions and were introduced to the concept of density through guided inquiry.
Weeks 4–5: The Science Behind Our Favorite Donuts
Students explored how ingredients interact and how heat causes physical and chemical changes during donut-making. Reflection through photos and videos strengthened communication and scientific explanation skills.
Week 6: Will It Dissolve?
Students investigated soluble and insoluble substances and observed how temperature affects dissolving, building an understanding of material properties and physical change.
Weeks 7 & 9: Cleaning Water Through Filtration
In an extended design project, students built simple water filters using natural materials. This experience promoted collaboration, problem-solving, and environmental awareness.
Week 8: Making Jelly Without Gelatin
Students explored gelatinization by making jelly with cornstarch, connecting scientific concepts to cooking while practicing measurement and sequencing.
Week 10: Homemade Ice Cream and the Science of Freezing
Students discovered how salt lowers the freezing point of ice while making ice cream in a bag, observing heat transfer and changes in state through active experimentation.
Week 11: Discovering Life in Pond Water
Using light microscopes, students observed microorganisms, developing an appreciation for scientific tools and the diversity of life beyond in the MIS pond water, and what is visible to the naked eye.
Week 12: Reflecting and Recreating
The semester concluded with a revisit to donut-making, allowing students to consolidate key concepts and reflect on their growth as young scientists.
By the end of the semester, our Little Scientists – CCA demonstrated curiosity, confidence, and enthusiasm as inquirers. Through observing, questioning, experimenting, and reflecting, they developed a strong foundation in scientific thinking—recognizing science as an integral part of everyday life.
