Hari Pendidikan Nasional (Hardiknas) is an official Indonesian commemorative day celebrated annually on May 2nd. It marks the birthdate of Ki Hadjar Dewantara, the pioneer of education for indigenous people during the colonial era and founder of the Taman Siswa school system.  The observance honors his relentless fight to give all Indonesians—not just the elite—the right to an education.
